THOUGHT: There’s only one way you will ever experience the kind of satisfaction that your soul longs for – and that is through the person of Jesus Christ!
BIBLE: “…whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again. In fact, the water I will give him will become a well of water springing up in him for eternal life.” John 4:13-14
TRANSCRIPT: Can you think of the last time you were really satisfied after a meal? I remember Liz and I going out on an anniversary date. And we went to this great restaurant and I was like, “Oh, this is gonna be so good.” And they brought out this massive bone-in pork chop, and it was… Oh, it was phenomenal. And I kept thinking, “Man, I wish that I could just keep eating,” right? But I could only hold so much. And I was just like, “Oh, this is so good.” And I remember just feeling so full. But here’s the deal. Even after that, gosh, just a few hours later, maybe, certainly, my breakfast the next morning I was like, “Hey, well, what’s to eat?” It’s funny, you can be so satisfied one minute and then so hungry the next minute. No matter what you put in your stomach, you’re gonna wanna eat again later.
And the same is true in our own walk with God and our own relationship with Him and in life. People are thirsty and hungry for things but there’s this natural craving for satisfaction. And we try to fill those with relationships. We try to fill that with friends. We try to fill that with careers. We try to fill that with hobbies. We fill it with lots of things that satisfy temporarily for a minute, but they don’t satisfy us for the long haul ’cause satisfaction really can’t be found in those things. And Jesus really put his finger on this in John 4. He’s talking to a woman at a well and she’s spiritually thirsty, and this is what He says in verse 13: “Whoever drinks from the water that I give him will never get thirsty again. In fact, the water that I will give him will become a well of springing up in him for eternal life.” Just think about that. He said, “I’ve got something to give you that will continue to well up and continue to satisfy you day after day. It’s not gonna fade. It’s not gonna get boring. What I’m gonna give you is something that really, truly satisfies you.”
I talk to people all the time. I’ll sit across the table at a breakfast meeting or a lunch meeting or a coffee meeting, and they’ll say, “I was really thinking this job was really gonna satisfy me,” or, “I was really thinking this relationship was really gonna do it for me. And now it’s broken off. Or I lost my job, or I didn’t get in at school,” or whatever the thing is, “I’m so disappointed.” And what they realize is they’re thirsty for something but they’re not finding it satisfying because they’re not finding it in Jesus. Psalm 63 says, “I’m thirsty for you, God. I’m thirsty for you, God.” And he said, “When I come into your presence, it’s like eating a big meal. I’m just satisfied in you.” The same satisfaction is only gonna come in your relationship with Jesus.
