Sumala” (2025) is a bone-chilling Indonesian horror-thriller that redefines supernatural vengeance. Set in the eerie Semarang Regency, this Rizal Mantovani-directed masterpiece weaves a haunting tale of dark folklore and brutal retribution. Sulastri (Luna Maya), desperate to conceive, strikes a sinister pact with a demonic entity, birthing twins: Kumala, a kind-hearted but disabled girl, and Sumala, who dies at birth. Years later, Kumala endures relentless abuse from her community, unaware that her deceased sister’s vengeful spirit lingers. When Sumala’s ghostly wrath unleashes gruesome chaos, no tormentor is spared. Blending visceral gore with emotional depth, the film delivers heart-pounding jump scares, a gripping narrative, and Makayla Rose Hilli’s unforgettable dual performance as Kumala/Sumala. With stunning cinematography and a chilling atmosphere, Sumala explores themes of bullying, sacrifice, and supernatural justice, drawing parallels to Chucky and The Grudge. Streaming on Netflix, this Southeast Asian horror gem is a must-watch for fans of intense, folklore-driven terror that lingers long after the credits roll.
